Question: Both are 3500 series. What is the difference between the LD and HD?
Answer: Here is what you need to know—HD is heavy duty and plugs into the 6 or 9 pin J-Port. The LD is light duty and plugs into the OBDII port. An F550 or equivalent is considered light duty. Above that is heavy duty.
Question: Where does the unit go in my vehicle?
Answer: The unit zip-ties up underneath the dash. If is not visible in the vehicle. It is about the size of a large peanut butter and jelly sandwich. The antenna which is the only thing visible is in the lower left corner of the windshield and is about the size of a Heath Bar.
Question: How much power does it draw on my vehicles?
Answer: Good question. Here is what you need to know on power: The units draw all of their power from the OBDII or J-Port and sometimes we need to use a universal connection. The unit uses approximately 100 Milliamps when the host vehicle is running and about 35 Milliamps when the vehicle is not running.
Question: What other issues with power can arise?
Answer: The OBDII and J-Ports typically draw their power from the accessory fuse panel. If we have an issue with blown fuses, we’ll need to look at what other appliances such as 2-way radios, on board lap top computers and cell phone chargers are wired in the same way and do a work around. All of these are things we will be able to determine when we install your units.
Question: How tamper proof are they?
Answer: We use a neon yellow zip tie with a logo on it for all connections. Hence, it is very difficult to tamper with because you’ll be discovered immediately. You can’t buy our logo’d zip ties at Radio Shack. If the zip tie has been cut, we know it has been tampered with. While a perfect system has yet to be developed, this is as close as we’ve seen.
Question: Is there anything else I need to know?
Answer: We’re glad you asked that one because there is a significant question regarding KILL SWITCHES. If your vehicle has a kill switch, we will need to hard wire around it and will ask you to have the wiring brought into the cab. Just one of those things we know from experience.
